Best day so far - part 2

Best day so far- part 2

I copy below a message I sent on the family WhatsApp group. It tells the story.

Hi Kids. Just to let you know, I will be reporting in tonight’s blog a double incident that occurred to your mother and me today.

Result: all is fine, no animals were hurt in this production etc

What happened: background first; we filled up with petrol at the start of the day. My car will normally do 250kms but with lots of climbing big mountains, I would expect to lose 10%, so good for 225kms.

We planned to fill up at 190kms.

Just before the petrol station, we entered a long tunnel (2.5km) and the unmistakable sensation of running out of fuel occurred. By some miracle (don’t believe in miracles) we limped into an emergency cutting in the tunnel.

Phew!

We had a jerry can out in no time and poured it into the tank double quick time, in the somewhat scary situation we found ourselves in. Lorries the size of, well, lorries hurtled past. I have very bright bicycle lights which were deployed on flash mode as an extra precaution.

“Quick, let’s go; only 5km to the fuel station.”

There followed an unmistakable sound of the petrol cap (brass) hitting the road as we sped off into the remaining section of the tunnel.

AAAAAAAAAAGHHHH!!!!

I howled.

Stopping at the tunnel exit (no way to stop before) I weighed up my options.

Grim.

Donning a reflective jacket, taking a bright flashing bicycle light and my strong torch, I ventured into the tunnel.

Happily there was a concrete conduit box on which I could walk, like a pavement but raised and safer.

I found the petrol cap.

Lesson 1. Don’t believe the petrol attendant when she says it’s full. It was not.

Lesson 2. The petrol cap now goes on my seat when I take it off so we won’t be doing that again.

Your mother is fine. I am fine. The car is fine. A holy trinity.

Love you all.
