Ancient and modern

Two excursions today.

Ancient

The Mogao Caves, often called the Thousand Buddha Caves, are a world-class treasure trove of human art and are considered one of the most valuable cultural discoveries of the 20th century. There are 492 caves, over 45,000 square meters of murals, 2,415 clay sculptures, and around 50,000 manuscripts written in various languages. If you lined up all the art, it would fill a staggering 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) of gallery space!

Modern

Shouhang Dunhuang 100MW Molten Salt Tower CSP plant, a pioneering concentrated solar power (CSP) project that uses mirrors to focus sunlight onto a receiver to heat molten salt, which then drives turbines to generate electricity. The plant is China's first 100MW commercial solar thermal power station and features an 11-hour thermal storage capability, which allows it to generate power more consistently than other solar technologies like PV. It is designed to produce approximately 390 million kWh of power annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions significantly.
