A day of fails and a stunning success.

Sorry for not posting yesterday. It was a lovely drive through Eastern France ending in Alsace (not sure if they know who they belong to, but the place names suggest one direction: Kaisersberg being one such). We stayed in Colmar, a surprisingly charming medieval town with a Little Venice and an Old Town. All a bit Disney, the photo gives a clue.

Today started erratically. Ham got lost in the car park, forgot his ticket and arrived at the RV 30 minutes late. Flustered but unrepentant.
Fail

We drove towards Basel on the motorway, preferring to eat up miles than meander endlessly in flat country before the mountains. Nellie found petrol and Chris announced he would lead. I hope you can see from our ‘trail’ photo that progress was not linear, instead I would describe it as chaotic. Fail

Nellie then selected a coffee stop which turned out to be a Chinese take-away whose coffee machine had broken. Fail

A successful picnic restored morale, courtesy of an excellent Co-op store selling fresh salads etc.

An exquisite drive, selected by Mr Waze, had us traversing valleys, mountain passes, picture-skew lakes, steep and narrow gorges, hairpin bends galore (the mighty Rolls proved too long to take some in one go), haymaking action was everywhere (apparently it has poured with rain until today) and we have arrived in a ski resort for the night. Our happiness was made complete by two things: very large beers and news of Nigel.

Nigel, being a man who is not daunted by anything, retired to UK with his car on a truck of shame, took it to David (aforementioned Lagonda expert) and they have found a new head, attached it to the block and he’s booked on the Eurotunnel tomorrow morning. He has three days to catch us up, hoping to marry up in Merano (not Venice, the other one).

Hurrah! It will be the stuff of legendary talks to Nigel’s grandchildren for years and years.
