Copas Ruinass - a world heritage site!
Having experienced three extremely stressful days, firstly repairing Nigel’s Lagonda blown head gasket and then Ham’s broken main rear leaf spring we decided to have a relatively short drive and some sight seeing.
We drove from Gracias and our comfortable hotel once more through the gorgeous Honduran mountains to Copas Ruinas. It was a three hour drive winding up and down through the hills, occasionally meeting parts of the road that have been washed away and, particularly Ham having already broken a spring, having to adjust speed and direction at short notice.
The road took us upwards to Santa Rosa where the road took a sharp right turn. Ham stopped at the petrol station at the junction to await the arrival of the others. The Rolls was steadily crawling up the hill whilst the second Lagonda is definitely finding the hills more challenging and getting hot much faster, sometimes waiting a while to cool down. Ham was met by the Classic Car Club of Santa Rosa, four of the nicest enthusiasts you could meet. Unfortunately Chris didn’t see the parked Lagonda so sailed straight past and the worthy enthusiasts only got a fleeting glimpse of the Rolls.
Onwards we went arriving at the Mayan ruins at Copas Ruinas at around 12:30. As I have always said our cars are our passports and once more it was proved correct. People in the car park just loved the cars including an English couple who couldn’t believe that three British cars were parked in the car park at this remote World Heritage Site.
The Mayan ruins are spectacular and not being any sort of specialist the best thing is to look them up in Wikipedia. Our guide took us around the site and we paid extra to visit the tunnels which as normal resulted in ham receiving yet another big bang to the top of his head! The bird life at the temples was also spectacular with numerous Scarlet Macaws, little wood peckers and many other species.
